What is the difference between IQOS ILUMA and IQOS ORIGINALS DUO devices?

IQOS ILUMA and IQOS ORIGINALS DUO are tobacco heating devices that have a lot of similarities, but also many more differences. Starting from the technologies used in these devices, all the way to functionality and personalization options, there are many differences that bring about a better overall experience.

What are the similarities between IQOS ILUMA and IQOS ORIGINALS DUO devices?

The IQOS ILUMA device has all the same features as the IQOS ORIGINALS DUO or IQOS 3 DUO, which are:

• • two consecutive consumptions;
• • fast charging holder;
• • pocket charger for 20 charges.

But, what's the difference? IQOS ILUMA and IQOS ORIGINALS DUO (as well as the previous IQOS 3 DUO) have some unique features.

Unique features of the IQOS ILUMA device

The IQOS ILUMA pocket charger is available in new colors, with new accessories coming soon. The new tobacco sticks are designed specifically only for the IQOS ILUMA devices and enable an improved way of consumption and more tobacco vapor.

But the biggest difference is actually in the device itself.

SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEM™ technology in IQOS ILUMA devices heats tobacco from the inside using a metal part inside the tobacco stick, but without a blade, unlike earlier generations of devices that heat tobacco with a blade. And no blade means:

• • no cleaning;
• • no tobacco residues;
• • no broken blades;
• • simple insertion and removal of the tobacco sticks.

But that's not all. The latest IQOS devices also come with advanced new features:

• • Autostart functionality heating begins as soon as the tobacco stick is placed in the holder.
• • Smartgesture functionality that is triggered through the IQOS application.
• • When the button is tapped twice, the holder will vibrate to indicate how much is left until the end of consumption.
• • When the holder is raised, the battery status can be checked.

Unique features of IQOS ORIGINALS DUO and IQOS 3 DUO devices

IQOS ORIGINALS DUO comes in unique colors and unique accessories. But these are not the only options specific to IQOS ORIGINALS DUO and IQOS 3 DUO devices.

This device uses HeatControl™ technology and heats the tobacco using a blade. This technology uses tobacco sticks that are open on one side so that the tobacco is visible.

The difference between the technology in IQOS ORIGINALS DUO and IQOS ILUMA devices

All tobacco heating products have a heat source.

The IQOS ORIGINALS DUO and IQOS 3 DUO holder contains sophisticated electronic components that heat the tobacco sticks specially designed for the IQOS ORIGINALS DUO and IQOS 3 DUO devices. Thanks to the patented IQOS HeatControl™ technology, this device heats the tobacco so that it produces and releases tobacco vapor that contains nicotine, but without burning the tobacco.

On the other hand, the SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEM™ in all IQOS ILUMA devices heats tobacco by induction thanks to the metal element in the tobacco stick itself, specially designed for IQOS ILUMA devices. These devices do not have a blade, so there are no tobacco residues after use, and no need to clean the holder as with previous IQOS generations.

The difference between IQOS ILUMA tobacco sticks and tobacco sticks for IQOS ORIGINALS DUO

Different devices, different tobacco sticks. IQOS ILUMA devices are used with SMARTCORE STICKS™ type of tobacco sticks, which have a metal heating element in them. These tobacco sticks are not compatible with the IQOS ORIGINALS DUO and the previous generations of IQOS devices. Unlike the tobacco sticks used with the IQOS ORIGINALS DUO and previous generations of IQOS devices, the SMARTCORE STICKS™ sticks are sealed on both sides so that there is no tobacco residue in the holder after use.

Size comparison of IQOS ILUMA and IQOS ORIGINALS DUO devices

Compared to the IQOS ORIGINALS DUO and IQOS 3 DUO devices, the IQOS ILUMA devices are slightly larger. In order to be able to support the new SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEM™ technology, a slightly larger and slightly heavier device has been made compared to the previous generation.

The IQOS ORIGINALS DUO and IQOS 3 DUO can be personalized thanks to the caps, doors and cases.
